one nation, under God… lest we not forget
Presidential address on mute. If you were to dig through the archives of this blog, you'd find that I've mentioned before my deep sense of patriotism to my state and country. My service in the military was the least I could do for this nation that has unfortunately and so often disappointed me in my adult life. You can't point the finger at one man or short term action. Our folly is self inflicted as a social machine... greedy, arrogant, and wasteful. My eyes well and I struggle back tears when I see the United States of America's flag waving in majestic representation of the founding principles of this nation. The state of the union in world affairs is nothing less than bittersweet for me however... the ideal in shadows. Today was probably a hard day for many, but it was just another day. It is what we do with the time we have that really matters. Maybe tomorrow will be different. Maybe.

Agreed
My GOD, where did you get all these? LOL
It is what we do with the time we have that really matters. If only everyone lived their lives with this in mind. It just makes me sad to watch people who get so angry over things that are so insignificant in the big picture. Just makes you want to shake them and remind them that life is too short to sweat the small stuff.
Civilizations -
About the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution, let’s say 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior.
“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to
exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.”
“The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
1. From bondage to spiritual faith;
2. From spiritual faith to great courage;
3. From courage to liberty;
4. From liberty to abundance;
5. From abundance to complacency;
6. From complacency to apathy;
7. From apathy to dependence;
8. From dependence back into bondage “
My guess is we are presently somewhere around a 6 to a 6.5. We won’t know until we see the voter turnout this November. The sad thing is that I think we were probably around a 3.5 when I was born. Doesn’t really speak to well of my generation does it, or those who we have entrusted to steward this great nation.
