I finally got mine loaded, after thinking I got a bum disk #2. After an hour or so of loading and Steam upgrading the goods were mine.
Was it worth the wait. Hell yeah.
Dust, Dust2 and Aztec never looked so good. The blood never looked so bloody. Wow.
I’m totally surprised by how well it plays on my years old PC hardware: dual Athlon MP 1800+ w/2Gb RAM and a 128Mb GeForce4Ti4600Ultra...it plays, well, just like non-Source CS plays, at similar framerates. The system set all quality, minus antialiasing and with simple reflections, to high and put me at 1024x768, surprisingly. I can’t play DOOM3 at anything higher than 640x480 without bogging.
And HL2 itself looks awesome. HL2:Deathmatch is so pretty. Maybe the Source Engine is concerned more with physics than with shading, but it’s the most impressive looking 3D game I’ve ever seen and if this is mostly the quality of their textures, well, so be it. It makes DOOM3 look downright ugly by comparison.
We gotta get some frag time in, soon.
