Hmmmm....yeah, the links have been flying over this.  I’m not really sold on it because there’s four disks in the uber set that I have no interest in watching.  Some of the language surrounding this new-new “director’s cut” has me cringing.  There’s mention of “new” visual effects and, personally, I find this so incredibly distasteful, ala STAR WARS special editions or Spielberg’s gay ass revisionist E.T. that it could potentially sour me to Ridley Scott as a director from that moment forward.

Of any film that’s ever been made, besides 2001 perhaps, there is no need for any updated visual effects.  This movie, along with BRAINSTORM and the aforementioned 2001, represent the pinnacle of optical compositing and a level of perfection that ILM was never able to achieve with the same technology and often failed to achieve with digital technology.

Seeing the 1993 or so “Director’s Cut” edit with no V.O., the unicorn dream and minimal gore for Tyrell’s death scene in Blue Ray will be quite amazing though and possibly worth a TV upgrade to something bigger for me.  It will definitely be the “killer app” that gets me to buy an HD player.
