I have been warned…
Since I'm not in a hurry to set up my own blog again it seems as good a time as any to take Mista C up on his offer to rent blogspace to me for real cheap. Like, dirt cheap. Free even.
Here's the short version of what I've been up to post joining of C -n- EL : work, and not much else. Oh, every once in a while I'll squeeze in an evening to go watch my friend DJ Engine spin at the Voda Bar in Santa Monica but that's only every other Wed. evening. Yeah, Wed. evening, what kind of time is that for getting your doll eyes on?
Wrapped up in continued wondering if I even want to do what it is I do for a living I've found some distraction in once again, like after 20 years or so, taking up guitar. This time, thanks to the internet, I'm making a little better progress on my own than I did as a kid thanks to the world of tabs pages. I'm also going to get some lessons from a friend of mine that just so happens to be an excellent axe ripper. I'm not going to expect him to turn me into the next Rhoads, Yngwie, Vai, Satriani or Lynch, but I'd like to someday jam out some good old Toadies with conviction and confidence, along with some nu metal strumming.
Right now I'm sparing the neighbors via headphones. I'd rather not get my roomie and I evicted while she's working in New Zealand.
Dude that rocks. I’m always happy to encourage musical pursuits… I’m sure you know about http://www.olga.net?
Toadies cover band, here we come!
Powertab and Band in a Box are essential bits of software.
Guitar has pretty much taken over all of my free time. It’s only getting worse.
Best hobby ever.
ogla.net...I do now. Thanks!
I’ve been hanging out mostly at mxtabs.net lately, which has loads of tabs (re-tuned the axe and have been doing the Deftones thing lately) and some chord and scale exercises. Sunday is my first real lesson. Woo-hoo!
Hmmm, I’ll have too look up those bits of software, skepticult. Right now I’m using Amplitube Live which does some nice tube amp modeling with several effects.
After I recover from getting my car out of the shop this morning I’m going to look into one of those hardware amp simulators that let you hook a pair of headphones up and not be tied to a computer (or amp, which I won’t buy until I’m quite a bit better than I am now).
One of the biggest advantages I’ve found to the powertabs is that the biggest powertab archive is very strict about what gets in. No more half ass “I tabbed this out while I was drunk and listening to a different CD.” The MIDI playback really helps a lot as well, especially if they take the time to do the bass track along with it.
As far as amp modeling goes, the Boss GT-6 is what I use for headphone/PC connection. It’s got pretty decent amp and cab sims, plus renditions of most of Boss’s line of pedals. Presets suck, but with a little patience you can get some great sounds out of it.
I also have a Fender Blues Jr. amp. Even with the master volume, it’s a bit loud for our apartment, but neighbors are for annoying. With the GT-6 running in front of it a lot of tonal possibilities are opened, even at relatively low volumes.
Louder definitely sounds better. I’ve only been able to crank it a few times, but the more air you can move and the more the tubes can cook, the more your tone rounds out.
This is my new object of lust. I hope to buy it in a few weeks. I spent my last two lunch breaks at the store drooling and noodling.
Hooray for stuff! (and things)
I friggin’ love the Telecaster. I’ve never played one, never had one in my hands even, just loved the sound. Plus it’s simple yet kick ass design.
I’ve got a Strat’ with two single coils and a humbucker back by the pegs that sounds pretty nice and will do me good for now. If I ever get any good at all a Tele’ is in my future. I kinda like the new J5 custom Tele. Pretty.
If I’m ever half way decent I plan on starting a nice little collection of guitars I admired growing up...the Tele’, the SG, a Flying-V, and...for the sillyness of it...a Warlock or a Rich Bitch...or, how about:

...wow…
Stuff!
I’ve got two Korean made guitars right now. I got ridiculously lucky on my picks and got spoiled. The neck on the Brawley is like melting butter, and the USA Goldtones on the Jet-Star are incredible. Jet-Star: $200, shipped. (eBay via VH1 Save the Music) Brawley: $300.
Wee!
My stuff.
The Tele is my present for a year of not giving up.
Are you in Houston?
Nope. “Los Angeles, fuckin’, California”...for the now. Because of my work (CGI), Dallas or San Antonio are about the most likely places I could live in Texas and actually make a living. Maybe.
Haha you guys rule. ive got a korean Tokai les paul at the moment, things plays like the real fukin thing haha cost me only 1300 and has real goto tuners and everything. id realy love to get a real Fender strat one day, such a beautiful tone can be extracted from them, good on you dude for learning the guitar i recommend listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan’s cover of Jimi Hendrix’s original ‘Little Wing’ for inspiration, it’s easily one of the most ridiculus songs i’ve ever heard in all of my years listening to great music, Peace
