I was a day off in thinking I couldn't be in Houston in time for the BB show down in San Marcos. I'm there to see my bro C, fo sho. It's just that this aligning of the planets (if they were in fact aligned) would be cool because we haven't been to a show in over a year. That's a long time, dangit. Smiling Komodo...

I spent the day around town... big kickoff tonight with open bar and free food... oh, yeah... and thousands of geeks. I had dinner at Mulates... red beans and rice with blackened alligator tail. Hell yeah.

Coffee. There is this amazing

Coffee. There is this amazing little coffee house down the street about 2 blocks that is also a thrown together theater. I heard Little Red Ridinghood (the alternative version) while ordering a latte yesterday. The 20 oz. version (not called a Venti) comes standard with 4 shots. I love them. I'm at that point in the morning where a coin toss is needed to decide between breakfast and lunch fixins. Breakfast almost always wins after a night of liver aerobics though, so I'll not risk dropping a quarter in the gutter during the decision making process. I just woke up. My tongue is wearing a mink stole and I feel like that coffee house is around the world in Nambia. I'm headed for the desert.

Expensive night. Holy fuck it

Expensive night. Holy fuck it is when you're not looking. Dinner at Port of Call... appetizers were Neptune's Monsoons. If you know 'Nawlins then you know exactly how deadly these are... yeah. So, crazy burger and police assistance later, we were on Bourbon St. and shortly in the blues bar of all good deliverance. Joe and I had a fab time while Raymund people-watched outside (read: observed strange breasts being flashed). Jimmy Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan later, we were back in motion. Drink. Observe. Drink. Laugh. Observe. It's all good. Expensive, but good. Joe and I have spent way too much money in this town tonight, but the pizza is on the way and the buzz is as strong as Paul Bunyan's Ox. I need sleep like the big Lotto payoff, but shit happens and tomorrow is another day. Ufftah!

Networkers sign-in was of

Networkers sign-in was of course networked, high tech, and efficient. I wish the A/C control in my room were that well designed. I have a test this afternoon, but that's it until the John Chambers kickoff. Hotel room cheesy movies it is...

Early. Ok, so far I’ve

Early. Ok, so far I've come to the following conclusions: 1. People in Nawlins like to party in a serious way. 2. There are a lot of people looking for for a free ride here. 3. Fried food seems to be the flavor of the day for most unfortunately. 4. The maid that prep'd my room is from the Arctic north. 5. Hotel bed sleep has a fractional rest factor compared to big 'ole home bed sleep. There may be more epiphanies after coffee but I doubt it.

Crazy road time. I think

Crazy road time. I think we left easily before lunch today and arrive around 8:00 thanks to a battery failure in Lafayette. Sucks. I stopped by Harrah's and won $100 off of $20. Yippie. I'm in New Orleans on a business trip, but there is something about being able to walk down the street with a double Crown on the rocks and not getting hassled that is pimp. Extra yippie.

Vacation but not. I truly

Vacation but not. I truly had a wonderful time in Minnesota. I love it there. I'm sure that I would eventually grow tired of the beautiful landscape and serene, slow paced lifestyle... yeah, surely I would. Heh. EL and I flew into the twin cities and picked up a rental. We didn't realize it at the time, but we were to put 1500 miles on the car in the next week. I spent the next few days playing 45 holes of golf on three courses and visiting with family for the holiday weekend. When EL and I set out on the morning of the 5th for our little adventure up the shore, we first headed to Wisconsin. A back country detour, a juvenile bald eagle sighting, and a flat tire later, we were in Bayfield were I went on a boat tour of 19 of the 22 Apostle Isles. When we finished our brief stop on the south shore, we continued around the Duluth anchored corner of Lake Superior for the north shore and beyond. We made our way up the shore with our usual coffee stop in Two Harbors. On the other side of Beaver Bay, we stopped for the night in Silver Bay so I could photograph Split Rock Lighthouse (seen below), Palasaide Head, Gooseberry Falls, and Tetegouche. We made our way to Grand Marais, where we had a private cabin, for the rest of the trip. If you are ever in Grand Marais, eat at The Pie Place. Trust me. We spent the entire next day exploring the Gunflint Trail bordering the B.W.C.A. (Boundary Waters Canoe Area). Copious quantities of deer, a couple of fox, beaver, and lots of birds were a neat treat to see, but nothing like the thrill of seeing an adult black bear in the wild. I think the highlight of the wildlife sightings was the few moose we saw near the Canadian border at the far end of Gunflint. I shot (photographically) a cow and her calf... which looks oddly like a kangaroo seen from straight ahead. Later, we saw a young bull wading and eating along a plush forest bank. Lastly, we saw another cow feasting in the swampland. I took photos of all of them, but due to a business trip, I won't be able to develop any of the shots until next week. We had a fabulous time and our trip went well overall. We did have a flight delay getting us back to Houston, but everything worked out. We're both extremely tired. Her more so from being a pinball from one family event to another and me because of my race with the sun. Up north, where we were at, the days are so long in the summer that first light starts peeking over the horizon around 4:15 in the morning and it doesn't get dark until almost 10:00 at night. I had to rise at 4:00 to get sunrise shots like this Split Rock sunrise. Tired.

yo, bro

We're talking about little'ol'me comin' to visit Planet Houston on the 24th. Well, well. Guess who's playin' not a couple hours away that night. Is that not the stars above a smilin' down; all the angels gathered'round, showerin' all their beauty down? Okay, maybe not, but it's a nice thought. Let's go get saved. Tomorrow night, uh, tonight, is all about more live music. It's been October since I last saw a Hyaline show (http://www.hyalineband.com). It's been too long. Their recent gigs are all new music from their soon to be in my hot little hands second album. I'm really looking forward to it. Dan, their drummer, and Zombie Night regular, might be bringing me a live recording of the gig I saw at The Roxy. They opened that show with a prog-nu-metal rendition of the theme to John Carpenter's Halloween. Fuckin'A. Sent chills up my spine. They're playing at the Viper Room this time which I'm sure is famous for something other than being the spot River Phoenix dropped dead in front of, but I can't remember what that might be at this time.
