If there were awards for

If there were awards for the most enthusiastic bus driver, my coach captain this morning would have them all. Morning people equally annoy and amaze me. My sister is a morning person. Grrrrr. So, I put our rental house in Virginia Beach on the market day before yesterday. The listing hit the streets around lunch time and by the end of the day, it had been shown four times and I had an offer. I received a call yesterday from my agent asking me to sit on the offer an extra day because in it's second day of eligibility, there were already ten additional showings. The housing market up there must be crazy right now. List your house is like throwing chum in shark infested waters. Mister UPS man delivered my Kenko goods yesterday. The 500D and the set of extension tubes probably won't get used often, but I needed them for my macro toolkit. I ended up choosing the Kenko tubes... which are excellent. The three tubes of incremental size (12/20/36), when stacked, can provide me 68mm of extension. The tubes, the diopter, and my 100mm macro should give me some more flexibility until I can afford the 65mm MP-E macro. That macro lens is my ultimate goal for macro work. Of course, I'll need focusing rails and a crazy tripod for that... it just takes time. The real jewel of the order was the Speedlite 550EX and a Stofen Omni-Bounce diffuser. I also got an extra battery and BG-ED3 battery grip... probably the most to-be-used item in the bunch. I can't ever see taking it off the camera. It's a shame the weather it total ass right now because I wanted to run some field tests this weekend. It looks as though I'm stuck indoors. Last night, EL and I met some of Sam's friends from Switzerland. We all headed out to Papadeaux for cajun grub and hurricanes. I was so tired. I am glad it's Friday for sure, but I have a lot of work to do today. Working tired sux0r big time. Pin up the revolving door to Uncle Buck's. I'll be there regularly.

Tired. I was washing

Tired. I was washing my face in the shower this morning and inhaled a soap bubble through my nose. That sucked. So I'm not quite done with the photos from the reception trip, but I did post a couple more last night. I was up early this morning working on a DR test from the house. Without fail, when I'm done with the approved procedure and everyone is "ok", I leave the house from work and get about 10 miles down the road when the phone rings with some new, last-minute requirement. Bunk. I need some coffee.

There was a really cool city-sponsored rose garden overlooking the shore of Lake Superior in downtown Duluth. I think I shot about 8 different flavors of roses.

EL took me to a really neat spot overlooking her little home town... Enger Memorial Tower. It was a fab place to view the area from a high vantage. The harbor of Duluth has a vertical lift bridge that cars drive across when in it's normal, lowered position. When a tall ship comes into the harbor, it lifts to allow mast passage. I took this long exposure during a lift cycle at night from the tower. It's my favorite night shot of the trip.

Here's a shot of the lower falls to compliment the upper and middle shots previously posted:

We went for a walk in Chester Bowl Park and EL showed me this moss that grows bright red naturally in the brook due to the extremely high mineral content:

cool moss!

Some kind of little mystery flowers...

what are these?

Unlike the golden dragon above and from the post a couple days ago, this dude is a red rocket!

red dragon

and of course... we have to have a creepy crawly for Sam and Sean... hehe... but I'll put it in the "more" section of the post. Other pics on 13th Stone.

Normal visible light exposure of

Normal visible light exposure of the upper falls area:

Granted, it doesn't look all sugar coated like the IR version, but it's still pretty cool. It would be neat to photograph the falls at sunrise/sunset in the Spring when the snow is melting and the water is roaring in huge volume. Too bad I have to work for a living and can't live off Lotto money. *sigh*

I've made it through half the day without killing anyone. I deserve a pat on the back.

(yet again) Someone has fucked the coffee up so bad in the machine that it must be drained, flushed, and cleaned before new brew can find it's way to my lips. Fucktard bitches.

I hate downtown today.

Give me a gun.

Complete bullshit. I get up

Complete bullshit.

I get up and do the morning routine today per usual except that I drive in to work at Joe's request. I get on I-45 southbound a couple of minutes past 7:00 and all is well... not. I took me just under two hours to get from my exit to the downtown exit today. Every idiot with a driver's license was on the road. A wreck on the south side of I-45 was backing traffic up as far north as midtown and the entire interstate was a parking lot. When I finally get off at McKinney, my clock says 8:55, so I pull into the parking garage with early bird discount until nine o'clock. I push the little ticket button and it shits out a ticket that says 9:01 aye emm. This means that my parking just went from 5 or 6 bucks to 15 dollars. Like I said... complete bullshit.

Yesterday at the office was

Yesterday at the office was surreal. I wonder if it represented the week ahead... one can only hope. It was eerily quiet. I didn't see my boss but once in passing all day. People walked with their head down as if ashamed to even be there... of course, I could be imagining it all, but there was definitely a sadness in the air and I was relieved to see the day's end. As a new day starts, I find myself longing for the end of it and wishing it to be Friday. This is certainly no way to live your life. But hey... you gotta eat. Maybe if today is like yesterday, it will pass painlessly and that Friday will be a wee bit closer.

Last night was our first evening at home since all the wedding hustle and bustle began. We opted to stay in and vegetate on the couch before turning in early. EL and I had hand picked a couple of cases of great wine for the wedding and a few bottles left unopened found their way to the bar in our den when the dust settled. I opened one last night and we sat laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of what television has become. There are so many so-called reality shows that I truly have lost count. I don't care for any of them, but they obviously get ratings or they wouldn't be some popular. Since we don't have cable anymore, the only programming I like to watch is CSI. I'm talking about the Las Vegas one, not the cheesy Miami rip-off version. There should be clarification. EL got me hooked on that one. Otherwise, I'm not a TV guy. It was hell getting up this morning. The first full night's rest in your own comfy bed doesn't prepare you for the morning ritual of prying yourself out of your own comfy bed. I could have slept until noon... at least. Ugh! I ordered some miscellaneous camera stuff that I'm hoping will be here before the weekend. I needed an extra battery. I am going to test out the 500D with my macro lens and see what happens. I almost bought the Nikkor 5T instead, but went with the significantly less expensive Canon diopter. I ordered a set of Kenko extension tubes to experiment with and finally broke down and ordered a hot shoe mount external flash with an Omnibounce diffuser. I've been cursing needing an external flash for months and I figured I may as well just shut up and get one. I'm anxious to test.

The other IR shot I

The other IR shot I got of the falls... this one is of the upper area:

I shot a few new species of dragons not easily located down here. When I get done plodding through the photos, there should be more...

We stopped at the national cemetery outside MSP. I have nothing else to say about it here...

I hope to be done weeding through photos tomorrow evening... for now, it's red wine and some time with my wife. She's really the best...

Our trip to Minnesota went

Our trip to Minnesota went better than could have been expected. Having only met her father once (at the wedding), it was my first time meeting EL's family and based on the numerous stories she's told of them over our seeing each other, I wasn't sure what to expect. My mother was in tow and the three of us headed for IAH in the early hours of Thursday morning. Sam dropped us at the terminal for our 7:30 flight. In a small world and pleasant coincidence, we met Syd on the plane to Minneapolis. She seemed really nice and I look forward to getting to meet her again under less time constrained circumstances. Once in the Twin Cities, we rented a coche for the almost three hourish trip to the Twin Ports. Traffic was light, the day was beautiful, and we made great time. As we entered Duluth, I was trying to warp the imagery of the town before me into the small port village that had been sitting in my mind's eye for months, but I just couldn't make the match. I was wrong. It was beautiful... seeped in history and tradition, but eager to please the modern tourist. We made our way along the main thoroughfare and exited toward the country. EL really came from a Township just outside the city proper, where most of her family still resides.

Her mother greeted us upon arrival with some much needed coffee and a warm welcome. Her father was golfing. He golfed at least 18 holes every day we were there... notice I said "at least". Heh. We spent the day meeting other family members. EL has a huge family. There are 23 grandchildren on her mom's side alone. I love her grandparents... especially her grandfather. He reminds me of my grandfather whom I dearly miss. I think we must have stayed up to the wee hours playing cards with the man. It was truly grand. Friday morning came all too early because we were determined to get into tourist mode and commence our sight seeing extravaganza. We started up the North Shore with a daily goal of Gooseberry Falls, stopping along the way at various sights. The landscape was beautiful... more so than I imagined. I would have liked to go further north to the Palasaides or the Boundary Waters, but we were limited on time. The shore of Lake Superior is kissed by flowing alluvial rock, boulders, and pebbles. The water is cold and clear... inviting, but not warm enough to be pleasurable. The drive up the shore was a naturist's dream. We stopped only briefly for fresh caramel rolls and coffee before arriving at Gooseberry. The autumn maples and towering aspens were cradling the falls so that all you could hear was the water's roar as approaching... building anticipation and curiosity with each step. Gooseberry falls was fabulous. I was bubbling with sensory delight while wrangling the jealousy of the locals that could consume this regularly. The falls are divided into sections aptly named upper, middle, and lower. I photographed a little of the fall area, but my favorite shots are the two infrareds I took of the upper falls and one of the corollary falls just beyond it. I haven't had time to post process any photos from the trip other than those here and in last nights post, but hopefully I will be able to soon. Here is one of the IR shot if the upper falls:

Surprisingly, I didn't take many photos this trip. I was very much in the meet-the-new-inlaws mode. When we returned from our trip up the shore, we immediately began getting ready for the reception EL's mom was throwing Friday evening. It was fab. It was at a large dance hall south of the city. She arranged a live band for dancing and catered the event. Everyone seemed to have a great time... I know we did. Saturday got off to a slow start. I think the last couple of weeks of wedding events and travel began to catch up as the last official event of the wedding passed. We spent the morning in conversation at home... trying to get motivated. The afternoon was spent downtown in Duluth. We walked Canal Park and the Lakewalk. We took in local shops and ate the local fair. It was relaxing. EL and I decided to hit the hay early Saturday to catch up and Sunday was a blur of packing and travel. I know I left out a thousand details... hopefully I'll remember to mention them as I have time. I'm headed back into the office again... wish me luck... I pray it isn't as bad as when I left.

Cheers!

It's late and I have to go back to the office tomorrow, but it's all good. I love EL's home town and her family is great. I wish this vacation didn't have to end.

I’m not even sure

I'm not even sure where to start. Wow... this has been a busy few days. I'm sure I'll leave out a million things, but I'll give it a go. After my appointment to get my back checked out, I went back into the office to finish the day. I was anxious to leave since we were expecting members of the wedding party to fly in and my departure from the office represented the beginning of my vacation... my much needed vacation. Leah, Hanna, Alison, and Andy were all flying in within a few hours of each other and Jason was coming in later that night, so we split the airport trips between us to get everyone to the house. Erin Lynn had prepared some wonderful and thoughtful gifts for her bridesmaids and since Sarah wasn't coming and Camron was going to meet us in Austin, we used the dead time before Jason's flight to present gifts to her half of the wedding party before my half started showing up. By the time Jason arrived just before midnight, we had most of the loose ends of planning tied up. Greg's flight started the next morning early for me... it was an 8:30 arrival. Kirk drove in from Maryland later in the afternoon and Sean from Los Angeles via Austin around 8 or 9 that evening. The ladies had spent the entire day pampering and catching up... I envision an onslaught of stories straight out of memory lane during spa pedicures and manicures and the like. "The Guys" were a bit simpler. We rendezvoused with Sam and headed directly for martinis and toted in Cuban cigars at Downing Street. The evening was filled with alcohol and good music. We made a brief stop for Jager shots in The Village before arriving at the Houston Blues Society open jam at The Big Easy house of mixology. We stopped at Taqueria Tapatia around 2:30 or so and were home by 4:00. Everyone caravanned to Austin early the next day where we had arranged to stay at the 3 bedroom cottage at The Mountain Star Lodge on Lake Travis. Friday was filled with wedding preparation. The men did sunset over the lake at The Oasis where much tequila was consumed. The ladies were busy with their own thing. Time kinda flew by and a lot of the last few days is a blur. Saturday morning, EL, Jason, Leah, and the remaining bridesmaids prepared a ton of food. Greg, Kirk, Sean, and I just chilled and try to not get in the way until we had to be at the boat around 2:30. The Flagship Texas pushed off the dock just after 3:00 with our wedding guest aboard. We had a fabulous ceremony on the upper deck as we sailed along the plush green banks of the lake. The winds were unruly, but the ride was smooth. After the ceremony, we all changed into casual wear. We had asked all the male guests to come in Hawaiian shirts and shorts. The ladies were to dress casual. Everyone seemed comfortable. The boat pulled in around 5:00 to allow departing guest to get to land. The captain had to check the radar and make sure we were good to go on our return to the lake, but all was good. My groomsmen made a quick beer run to compliment the two cases of hand picked wine we provided for the party portion of the cruise. The weather was fantastic and everyone seemed to really enjoy the location and festivity. I had arranged with Sam to have some special cigars for my groomsmen shipped over from Switzerland. They got hung in customs briefly and we were worried about them making it in time, but they had... delicious little happy sticks. When we docked again at 9:00, I think everyone had a pretty good buzz going if not substantially more and no one left without a smile on their face... especially the captain after I paid the bill. Ugh! We were married and it simply couldn't have gone better. A lot of folks met up with us back at the cottage for more drinks and wedding gift opening before rolling home. Yesterday morning was another day of flights and travel ending in us back at our Houston home with only one wedding guest remaining and he left this morning. I know this wasn't a very detailed account and I hope to have some photos soon. We left disposable cameras on all the tables for guests to snap away and I know Michael and Pam took some good photos. I especially hope the ones of the wedding bouquet turned out... we had the flowers Fed-Ex'd in from Hawaii and they were absolutely gorgeous. Hmm... what else... oh! I got a new tattoo a couple of days before the wedding. I love it. I have no photos of that yet, but maybe when I get the wedding photos back, there will be some in the bunch. I need to run, but I'll add to this if I remember something. It really has been a blur, but it went better than I could have hoped. Have a good holiday weekend!

pee ess... EL and the groomsmen can guest post here, so maybe they'll have some additional details?
