A full tummy. A full

A full tummy. A full day. My sister woke me from a restful sleep this morning. EL had called last night and I slept right through it. (not unlike me sleeping through the worst wind storm Houston has has in some time the night before... speaking of that storm, it almost blew part of my house down and I had a lot of fence damage... anyhoo, just a side note) We did the family present and social thing this morning after breakfasting on some grapefruit my uncle grew and some pumpkin/orange/walnut loaf-type-substance my aunt baked. I was half asleep during most of it. My day was spent in two places: here with Bob, my mom, and my sister... and far away with someone very special to me. It was really hard to be in both places at the same time, but somehow I managed. Bob is a master at cooking Turducken. Today was not a turducken day, but instead he substituted a pork roast where the chicken and duck would normally go... it was fucktabulous. Jean-Paul, Maria Elena, and Michelle stopped by for some food in the afternoon too, but they didn't stay because Michelle was feeling bad. I have been lazily socializing with family all day and really have been longing for a nap. The high points of my Christmas morning were phone calls with EL. I miss her tremendously. 6 days to go. I can do it. Sean called me from Kentucky where he is visiting his father. He is excited about the Colorado New Years and I'm looking forward to seeing him again. That damn Los Angeles keeps taking him away from me. Fuckin' Hollywood. ;-) I don't mind so much because I know he won't forget me when he's on the cover of Entertainment Weekly and shit. I cut my hand oven on a nail in the fence outside while trying to repair it with Bob. I am not too happy about that. I am seriously fighting a food coma. I hope everyone is having a Merry Merry Christmas! I need some merry merry coffee.

(ps. I miss you)

“I’ll be here for you”

"I'll be here for you" - Robert Earl Keen Good times come and then they go
The rain will fall the wind will blow
Through it all you gotta know
I'll do what I can do
To protect you right or wrong
Heal the hurt 'til the hurt is gone
I'll be right where I belong
I'll be here for you

I'll be here
when the sky turns gray
The sun goes blind
and the moon won't stay
I'll be the light to guide your way
onto some place new
I'll be here
when the crowd is gone
The last note fades on the very last song
I'll be the road to take you home
I'll be here for you

When your star falls from the sky
And your wings don't want to fly
Just remember I'm standing by
To help to see you through
'Cause better days
will come again
Clouds will break,
your heart will mend
I'll be where I've always been
I'll be here for you

I'll be here
when the sky turns gray
The sun goes blind
and the moon won't stay
I'll be the light to guide your way
onto some place new
I'll be here
when the crowd is gone
The last note fades on the very last song
I'll be the road to take you home
I'll be here for you

You know, I used to

You know, I used to read the paper... a long, long time ago. I used to watch the news on television. Slowly, my news feed became more spread out and almost entirely electronic as I defaulted to Internet news sites... partly because of selection, but mostly because of paper conservation. I love trees... what can I say? Anyhoo, we had terrible storms here last night and into the morning. An 18-wheeler carrying 21 tons of baled cotton exploded on US59 this morning and blocked traffic for hours. Over 120,000 people lost power at some point during the storm and they estimate 30,000 or so are still without power. There is debris everywhere... uprooted trees... signs... trash. I looked up the details of the storm online because I was curious about what I slept through after seeing the aftermath on the way to work. I looked for the storm story and found a fresh reminder of why I no longer read the news. So many deaths... so much senseless crime and violence... often over seemingly nothing... it's too much to bear. Day before yesterday, a Houston man killed his wife in their bedroom by beating her with a hammer and stabbing her repeatedly... then he attacked their daughter (who got away) before shooting himself with a shotgun. Apparently it all started over financial stress. WTF? Pick up a paper or surf to a random news site and you'll find dozens of stories just like that one... I can't handle it. It saddens me toward the human condition. What have we, as a species, become? Between existing in the demoralization of society and interacting with the superficial, god-money hungry, lying majority, it's no wonder we all kill each other. I don't need the news because it just brings me down. The story today about the guy that beat his wife to death with a hammer over financial problems leaves me in complete shock. I wish that guy could have looked at his wife and daughter and realized the abundance of his wealth. He was rich and it had nothing to do with money. Good times and bad times come and go... but the human spirit can persevere untarnished when our aim is true. I didn't mean to get all philosophical here, but I guess I was just trying to get around to saying, for me anyway, the holiday season is not about "stuff" that can be bought or gifts that can be given... I embrace and cherish time with friends and family. It takes nothing more than a hug from my sister or holding EL's hand to realize that I am one of the richest men on Earth. As I type this post, my mom and her boyfriend are coming with Camron (my sis) to spend Christmas with me in Houston. I am leaving the office at noon to meet them and thought I'd place my obligatory holiday message here before I departed. Although it's been said many times, many ways... Merry Christmas...

I managed to get out

I managed to get out of the office a little early yesterday after all. I decided to stop by the happy hour thing at 5:00, so I took the METRO 25 Richmond to The Harp and saw what I thought was a mugging in progress. That local route swings through some shady territory on the outskirts of downtown. I arrived at The Harp around 5:00 and no one was there yet, so I grabbed a couch and a pint and relaxed for a few before Kim, Leah, Sean, Chris, and Katie showed up. Sean had this crazy Santa hat with lights and deer horns. We met up with Gil at Brasil for some food. I always get their turkey sandwich on focaccia with avocado... yum! The entire time I was thinking of EL and wishing she was with me. I was really tired when I got home and stayed out way longer than I originally wanted. I called her as soon as I got home and the second she answered, I completely forgot about my day. I wish I could blink the next six days away.

Work this morning sucks. I am in the middle of troubleshooting a routing issue that is quite elusive. Intermittent problems are the worst kind to attack because you can rarely get prediction or reproducibility. It's windy and cold here... we must have had a terrible storm last night because there is debris scattered about that appears to be the aftermath of a hurricane. I want coffee... no... I need coffee.

I managed to make it

I managed to make it to the downtown post office during a break in the rain, but it's weird going there since nine-eleven because of it's location in the federal court building. They closed off all the normal entrances and so you have to go through a big metal detector setup and remove all your extras tidbits of schtuff to be run through the x-ray machines. I'm sure EL is going to wonder why her little package has a "INSPECTED BY U.S. MARSHALS" stamp on the outside. LOL. The line at the post office was huge. I think I was the only person there to just mail one thing... everyone had bags of mail requiring postage... I assume they were Christmas cards (which I didn't send out any this year). I'm really, really tired. I could pass out right here in my office. I didn't sleep well last night. I was invited to a little pre-Christmas happy hour his afternoon, but given the weather and my being exhausted, I don't know if I am going to go. I want to, but man... sleep sounds good. I'll probably go for just a little while. I wish EL was going with me. I miss her. I was going to have these replaced today, but the piercer I've selected is closed today. I think I need some serious coffee... stat!

So here I sit…

So here I sit... in my office. Exactly where I was a few short hours ago on Friday morning... missing her and looking at almost two weeks before we could see each other. I'm tired. This is way too early for me to be at work. I searched and searched on Thursday for flights that I could afford... everything was either completely booked or well over a grand. I just couldn't make the stretch. Friday morning, I had almost accepted that I was not going to see her again before Christmas when I decided to look just once more. A seat had opened up at the last minute. I couldn't book it online because the system was too busy and I kept getting bumped trying to get a ticketing agent. Finally (and frantically), I was able to get someone on the phone that was eager to help me... $700 later I had a ticket and a rental car to begin what was going to be the most stressful air travel I have ever had. I left work early to get to the airport. Traffic was absolutely insane. Since ever flight into Colorado Springs was booked, I had to fly into Denver... via Minnesota. I didn't tell her I was coming. I wanted this to be a surprise. The flight into the twin cities was uneventful until we entered the approach area. It was snowing at the airport and ATC was being extra cautious. We were placed in a holding pattern for about 45 minutes before being cleared to land. This normally would not be an issue... except this time, my connecting flight into Denver was scheduled for an hour after my arrival from Houston. You do the math: 45 minutes in holding + 8 minute taxi to gate + 2 or 3 minutes to deplane (I was in the front of the aircraft) = holy shit. I ran from the plane to the nearest gate information screen to find my departing flight about a half mile on the other side of the airport (no exaggeration). I sprinted toward my gate. I jumped on a cart that was headed that way, but apparently the guy thought he was driving Ms. Daisy, so I leaped from the cart and continued my mad dash for the flight. Now, one half mile in five minutes isn't bad, but when you have a sweater, jacket, and carry-on bag in tow... wearing Docs... and you're out of shape (like me)... THAT is a struggle. I was so out of breath as I arrived at the gate that I couldn't speak. I shoved my ID and boarding pass into the ladies hand as they were beginning to close the door to the plane. I almost spent the night in Minneapolis... but I didn't. Thank God. I was still huffing and puffing as I found my seat on this completely full flight. Everyone was glaring at me like I was some kind of freako. I just smiled. I made it. Anyhoo, the flight to Denver was bumpy with a lot of extreme turbulence on approach, but we landed on time and I before long, I had my rental and was on the road to Colorado Springs. I suppose it was about quarter after midnight when I pulled up to her apartment... about 10 hours after I left Houston. I didn't realize it was 95 miles from Denver International to her place. I didn't care. It was worth every second. Bob and Christina had been in on my surprise and so they made sure she answered the door when I knocked. I wish I had a picture of the look on her face. Priceless. Of course, I was in a little trouble for making her worry since I had been in the air and out of touch all afternoon/evening... but not too much. I felt terrible about that... but I know that I couldn't lie to her and I would have spoiled the surprise if I had called when I got to Denver.

Even though I was only able to stay for one day, it was so wonderful to see her again. Saturday zoomed by and we didn't really do anything other than spend time with each other. We talked a lot... I love talking with her. My flight on Sunday was at 2:00-ish, so I left her apartment at 10:30 to make it to Denver, return the car, get to the gate, etc. in time. I turned the car in at the ass-pirate rental car place for a shocking $123.00 for a Friday night to Sunday afternoon rental... at a discounted rate. Holiday price gouging should buy you a ticket straight to hell. The rental return is way off the airport, so I had to trolley back over to the terminal area. DIA's concourse and terminal layout is really whacky. I don't understand why they built it like this, but each concourse is separated by train and ALL concourse baggage claims are together at the terminal... also separated by train. So basically, you have to take a train everywhere. I checked in when I got to the terminal and found out I'd been bumped to a 4:35 flight. Guess what? It's about 12:30 and I don't board for almost four hours. Great. I could have spent this time with EL had I just called to confirm my flight. When I book flights online, I have a profile set up where flight changes and delays at the last minute are emailed to my cell phone. Since this was a last second purchase over the phone, none of that info made it to me. *Sigh* I stood on the upper level dialing EL to tell her the news as a little kids Christmas show was going on below.

If you remember me writing about how EL called my office in the middle of the night and left me voicemail so that I would find in the morning and me writing that I couldn't remember anyone ever doing something so thoughtful and sweet for me, then I have to say that is nothing compared to what she did for me yesterday. I called her and explained what happened with my flight schedule change and she drove to Denver to stay with me while I waited. I tried to tell her that it was too far and that it really wasn't necessary, but she still came. I can't say anyone has ever been so thoughtful or put any type of effort into being with me. I was speechless. It takes over an hour to get to the airport from her place, so I wandered around. I got a massage at this chair massage therapy place in the airport. OMG that hurt. The masseuse made comment that I must have a stressful job to be as knotted up as I was... if only they knew. I had some chips and salsa and beer at an airport pub. I wandered through shops and people watched. I pee'd... a lot. I must have the smallest bladder on Earth. I will say however, Denver International Airport has the best smelling men's rooms I've ever been in.

When she arrived, we walked around the airport shops a bit... there are not many places you can go since the concourses are closed to non-ticketed peops. We had coffee and watched some of the Broncos/Raiders game. Yes. I watched football on television. I hate football... but I like watching it with her. Go figure. There was a guy walking around the terminal area before she got there that was wearing a Broncos jersey... in jeans... tucked in... without a belt. I wanted to slap him, but that just wouldn't be right. She and I saw another munchkin dog in the airport. The owner said that it would never get bigger than 5 pounds when full grown. I am not certain, but I think my dog shits more than 5 pounds sometimes... well, maybe not that much, but damn that was a small dog. That dog was so fuckin' cute it was disgusting! If EL ever keeps me around long enough to get a pet together, it should be one of those little munchkin dogs. I think my cats are at least twice as big as that cute little puppy. You could put that dog in your pocket. Anyhoo, like always, my time with her went by way too fast and before I knew it, it was time to board. I felt myself missing her before we even parted. No sooner had we turned from each other and I had taken a step toward the security check point, an onslaught of rent-a-cops from the airport decided I might be carrying a milk jug of Ebola virus in my backpack and commenced my dissection. I didn't actually get strip searched, but I did have to take off quite a few clothing items, get frisked, have individual items (like shoes and such) re-run through the x-ray machine, have my bag thoroughly searched... twice... and get asked questions before I was allowed to continue. I'm glad I wasn't carrying my laptop. Who knows what they would have done to that... and, apparently, a lot of people forget them.

My flight back to Houston was uneventful and long. I thought of her and was happy and sad all at the same time. I gave up my seat so this young couple could sit together... which placed me between a bitchy old lady and a overweight guy that couldn't stop eating candy. I grew nauseous from the reek of chocolate bars and body odor. Smooth move on my part, eh? Anyhoo, when we got into Texas airspace, the plane started circling as the captain informed us that between fog and high traffic, Houston was going to be a little further away (chronologically speaking) than expected. Ah yes... my old friend... the holding pattern.

My plane arrived in Houston about 45 minutes late. Almost all the connecting flights had already left. I saw the looks of anxiety and disappointment on the faces around me of people not at their final destination and my heart went out to them because I know that feeling... I was almost there Friday night. I waited until everyone left the plane. I was the last one off. I wanted to make sure that I was not slowing anyone down on their way to wherever they were going. It was one of those moments where saying Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays would qualify you as an instant jackass. The cherry on top for these folks was our arrival into terminal D... the "international terminal". There are few domestic flights that end up at terminal D and it's a trek to connect to other domestic flights. By the time I made it home (after a small stop for cat food), I was exhausted and ready for bed. Discounting the struggle surrounding holiday travel, I had a great trip... and, like every time I get home from Colorado, I laid my head on the pillow with the same thought running through my head:

I miss you.

I’m back in Houston. Oh

I'm back in Houston. Oh yeah, I left Friday. It was a little (ok, a lot) spontaneous, but something I felt like I needed to do. My travel both directions was troublesome, but everything in the middle was wonderful. More of everything tomorrow, but for now... sleep.

“Butterfly” - Lenny Kravitz you

"Butterfly" - Lenny Kravitz
you are the most beautiful thing
i’ve ever seen
you shine just like sunlight rays
on a winter snow
i just had to tell you so

your eyes sparkle as the stars
like the moon they glow
your smile could light the world on fire
or did you know ?

your mind’s full of everything
that i want to know
i just had to let you know
i just had to tell you so
you’re my butterfly
fly high
fly fly fly

You would not believe what

You would not believe what I heard on the bus this morning. I was sitting in front of these two women carrying on a quite random conversation.

"My little boy came home from school yesterday and told me about his classmate with big blue balls."
"You know, when I wear only one sock, my other foot stays warm too!"
"We have these fake cat puke turds laying around our house to freak out guests."
"Last night, I went to my boyfriend's house to let my little boy tweeze the ingrown hairs out of his chin."
"Sex wasn't too successful for me yesterday because I had really bad gas and it just kept exploding..."
"It's so funny when I fall down in the street."
"Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka was so fucking hot... but not as hot as Kevin Spacey and his little balding gayness."

WTF? You know, I stand by my original statement that riding the METRO is pure entertainment. It's rarely a let down. Forget sitcoms... Houston METRO is where it's at.

I had a successful meeting this morning and some tasty espresso... the day started off good. I found a voicemail from EL in the office when I came in and that really made my day. I miss her. I have a lot of work to do and I think I'm going to end up working through lunch (again). I don't mind... it's the weekend... or close enough anyway. I am wearing the sweater I got for Christmas and love it. It's really comfy. I need to get back to work. Did I mention it's the weekend?! Woooohooo!

Airlines are sheisty pirate bastards.

Airlines are sheisty pirate bastards. I have just spent 45 minutes talking with every reservation agent for every air carrier ON EARTH. There is no way I'm getting to Colorado via commercial aircraft this weekend short of about $1200.00... twelve hundred dollars to sit next to the guy that paid three bills because he bought them a few months ago. Why? It just doesn't seem fair.
